NAWMA Fibre Polishing Plant (FPP)

About This Project

Delivering smarter automation for a cleaner future

Name of the business/customer:

Northern Adelaide Waste Management Authority (NAWMA)

Location:

Edinburgh, South Australia

Type of project:

Industrial Automation

Project Overview

Electric Control Solutions (ECS) was engaged by NAWMA to deliver the complete electrical and automation package for the new Fibre Polishing Plant (FPP) – a state-of-the-art facility designed to meet Australia’s new recycling and export standards.

Processing more than 31,000 tonnes of paper and cardboard each year, the FPP removes over 1,000 tonnes of contaminants. Co-funded by Federal and State Governments, the plant enhances the performance of NAWMA’s Material Recovery Facility (MRF) by integrating both sites into one fully coordinated system.

Our Solution

ECS provided a turnkey electrical and automation solution from design through to commissioning, ensuring seamless integration and long-term reliability.

Scope of works included:

High Voltage & Infrastructure

  • Managed the high-voltage connection through SAPN, including transformer procurement and coordination.
  • Designed and installed full site electrical infrastructure, including interior and exterior lighting, emergency and exit lighting, general power, and data systems.
  • Switchboards & Equipment Installation
  • Engineered and installed all site switchboards, including the Main Switchboard and a custom-built Motor Control Centre (MCC).
  • Completed electrical installation of major plant equipment such as conveyors, optical sorters, compressors, balers, and compactors.
  • Automation & Integration
  • Developed a custom PLC and SCADA system to automate plant processes and enable real-time monitoring.
  • Integrated standalone OEM systems and linked the FPP with the existing MRF for unified control and operation.
  • Commissioning
  • Completed entirely in-house, with a strong focus on safety, operability, and long-term maintainability.

Outcome

ECS delivered a fully automated, high-performance facility that enhances recycling efficiency, reduces contamination, and supports South Australia’s commitment to a sustainable circular economy.
